There are many reasons that I love being a second shooter for another photographer at weddings. For example, there is way less pressure, you get to be more creative with different angles and shots, and you usually don’t work quite as long as a day as the lead photographer (including doing all of the post editing work after the wedding is over).
Over the last twelve years, I have photographed over 30 weddings as the lead photographer and close to 20 weddings as the second shooter. I have had the privilege of working with great photographers (including 2 very close friends, Angela and Kim).
As an assistant to the lead photographer, my job is to do whatever the head photographer needs—I carry a lot of extra gear, help organize the formal family photos, and take photos with a different lens or angle than the main photographer. The second photographer usually works a lot with the groom before the ceremony while the main photographer gets photos of the bride getting ready.
Weddings are long, tiring days but being a small part of someone’s special day is so wonderful! I love seeing the love that the bride and groom have for one another, and each wedding day is so unique!
